Walking Tour: Ponta Delgada

Overview:

We start our tour at Portas da Cidade, an iconic symbol of Ponta Delgada, where we share curiosities about the founding of the city. We continue to the Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião, exploring its Manueline architecture and local religious importance. We walk down Rua dos Mercadores, full of history and traditional commerce, with a brief stop to try a queijada or bolo lêvedo with coffee. We continue to Graça Market, where we discover the island's typical flavours with a small tasting of pineapple, cheese or tea. We visit the São Brás Fort, next to the harbour, to learn about the defence against pirates and the Azoreans' ancient connection to the sea. If the group is motivated, we'll continue on to the António Borges Garden, an enchanting botanical space full of exotic species. We finish at Campo de São Francisco, next to the Convento da Esperança, with the story of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres and final recommendations for making the most of your stay in São Miguel.
